I saw this band on TV twice last week and they probably have the best keyboardist in the world, but not because of his keyboard playing. When the band are playing he plays the keyboards occasionally but seems to be more concerned with dancing wildly and screaming the lyrics to the song. Lollapalooza Line Announced

The line up for Lollapalooza has been released and it contains a lot of great bands, including Of Montreal, who I've been listening to a lot recently. I wish that I could go but there is no way I could afford to go to America this summer as well as the ticket price. Editors Cover Gorillaz

Editors are a band that I have been listening quite a lot to recently, their debut album, The Back Room, is released in America on Tuesday and you can read my review of it here. They are a great band and I reckon that they could become very big within a couple more albums. I found this cover that they played on Radio1 a few days ago and it's really good. The cover is of Feel Good Inc by Gorillaz and instead of playing a normal boring cover of the song, the band have put their own unique twist onto the song and slowed it right down. They also played it acoustically so it is now like an alt-country song when compared with the Gorillaz original, and Tom Smith also decided to add a bit of the chorus from Munich into the song making it completely original.

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer are a great Belfast band who make amazing indie/electronica/pop music, that sounds in my opinion like a lo-fi version of the Postal Service, but unique in their own brilliant way. They're playing at SXSW this week and are one of only 7 Northern Irish bands playing there out of the about 1,400 bands in total playing at around 60 stages. They have been getting a lot of good local press recently and deservedly so, because they are a great band. They have a few songs on their MySpace page that you can listen to, and I reccomend that you do.

The New Pornographers Live

Here is the set played by the New Pornographers that I posted earlier this week, but now broken up into the different songs, unfortunately this means that the talking in between has been cut out to make them a decent size for downloading. The songs all sound really good, but unfortunately they didn't play Streets of Fire which I would say is one of my favourites of theirs. Twin Cinema has some problems at the start and the sound quality is awful, but it sounds a lot better about a minute into the track.

Destroyer is the moniker for Dan Bejar, who is most famous for his work as part of the supergroup The New Pornographers. It started out as a solo project for him in the mid nineties and he developed his own style. In 1996 he released his debut album We’ll Build Them A Golden Bridge which was a success for the new artist with his unique lo-fi electric folk. Editors - The Back Room

Editors are a gloomy four piece band from Birmingham. Without even releasing their debut album , the eerily-titled The Back Room in America they have already drawn the obvious comparisons to Interpol and Joy Division, frontman Tom Smith is the reason behind these comparisons with a voice reminiscent of Paul Banks and Ian Curtis.

From the opening song Lights you can see that the reasons for these comparisons are clear, because of the common style of the band and Tom Smith's Paul Banks impersonation. Even still it has a great opening with a simple guitar riff by Chris Urbanowicz and building up with drums into a powerful catchy chorus. Then comes the first of three already released singles Munich which manages with excellent guitarring, to be both a very dark song while still remaining very much a song that you could dance to. The second of the three singles follows this. Blood shows that Editors do have pop sensibilities in the incredibly rhythmic drumming of Ed Lay, while still being able to show their bitterness through the lyrics from Smith. Then comes one of the slower and more subdued songs on the record, Fall which shows another side to the band. It still has the sense of melancholy common throughout the album but builds up to a rousing climax towards the end. “All Sparks” is one of the lighter sounding songs on the album, but Smith's lyrics reveal otherwise and contain the pessimism that has accounted partly for some of the Joy Division comparisons. Right in the middle of the record is arguably the best song on the record. Camera's soft guitar by Urbanowicz and smith's melodic vocals create a very sombre tone to this song. This slow-burning style should be the direction for Editors to move into, if they want to try and escape the comparisons. Then there is Fingers in the Factories, which sounds like Munich Pt. II with slightly stronger rhythms. Fingers in the Factories is most memorable for having one of the best choruses on the album. Bullets was the first of the three singles to be released and suitably so. Its thumping bass and drums with Smith's lyrics and vocals make it definitely one of the better performances of the album. Someone Says has the up-tempo rhythms similar to those in Bullets and Smith's powerful vocals again create a strong atmosphere in the song. However, it isn't all doom and gloom with Editors, as a more uplifting message is told on Open Your Arms, when Smith sings, “Open your arms and welcome,” but the song still contains the bands melancholy while being very uplifting. The album closes on Distance another of the slower songs and has the effect of soothing and comforting the listener with Smith's echoed voice and Urbanowicz's gentle and subtle guitar.

While the lyrics in some of the songs may show Tom Smith's current lack of experience as a songwriter, but you have to remember that this is only their debut and they are all only 23. With time no doubt Smith will strengthen as a lyricist and the band will outgrow the Interpol and Joy Division comparisons, developing their own unique style in the process. There is no doubt that this is one of the strongest debuts by any band this year.

Desaparecidos are a punk rock band from the frontman of Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst. Their songs still contain Conor's amazing wavery voice but he also sings with force and meaning in a lot of the songs as well. The lyrics are very political and about the state of America, like in the song The Happiest Place on Earth (which you can listen to below) I only really started listening to them last night and they are a good band, and suprising very different to Bright Eyes even though they contain a lot of the same members.

Elliott Smith Live

I found these today on another blog and they are really good. It's Elliott playing live in Brooklyn in 2003, not all that long before his death. His depression isn't apparent in the slightest bar the content of the song as he laughs and jokes with the crowd in between. These are definetly worth listening to and downloading.

Yo La Tengo Covers at You Ain't No Picasso

Yesterday You Ain't No Picasso posted a load of covers for their annual fundraiser at WFMU. What happened was that if you called in with a donation of $100 or more you got to request Yo La Tengo to play a cover song of your choice from anything you wanted. There are obviously some really interesting and weird selections for covers, like the Batman theme, others are really good like the cover of John Lennon's Instant Karma and others are just a bit simple, like Happy Birthday.

Such Great Ads?

I was watching TV last night and I saw the infamous ad for Intel chips in Macs and I now find it really funny because it is so similar to the video for Such Great Heights and it's unbelievable that Apple are actually still showing it. I know that the directors of the video also directed Such Great Heights, but even still it's riduclously lazy for the two directors to do that and still get paid quite a large amount. But I'm also suprised at the lack of music taste within Apple. Such Great Heights has been one of the most listened to tracks on Last.FM for months, yet no one at Apple's advertising has seen the video and made the connection.
Another ad that I saw last night was an ad for Ask.com, at the time I wasn't actually watching the TV but I heard the music for it and it was Iron & Wine's cover version of Such Great Heights unfortunately someone has decided to cut a part of the lyrics from the song out in the middle of it. But this mean tthat in the space of about 4 minutes I saw two ads that related to the one Postal Service song.
But what I really don't understand is why that Iron & Wine song is such a great song for an advert to be honest there's nothing really all that special about it, and in my opinion the Postal Service original version is a lot better.

Bright Eyes + Jenny Lewis

I finally got the two Bright Eyes' CDs that I must have ordered about a month ago. I've had a very quick listen to both and they seem really good, I especially like the opening track on I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, just because I love listening to Conor Oberst talk at the start of it. I'll listen to them a bit more later and then post my thoughts on them then.

Mushaboom Remix

Rilo Kiley - Frug
I heard this for the first time yesterday after downloading it from You Ain't No Picasso, because I've never listened to anything by Rilo Kiley despite having wanted to for the past few months. I must have listened to it for about an hour straight on repeat, because it is such a good song. Jenny Lewis' voice in it sounds really cute and goes with the guitar and drums brilliantly.

I recently heard a bit about this band and they sounded very interesting so I decided to try and find a song or two by them. I got this song and I really like it, even though it is something that I normally wouldn't even consider listening to.

matt pond PA - New Hampshire
This is the first of two songs by matt pond PA. This song is really beautiful and sounds amazing. It reminds me of the summer and spring even though it has been snowing here during the past week.

This is a very different song to the other matt pond PA song above. This is far more up-tempo, but still as good as the previous one. I am going to have to try and find a CD by matt pond PA somewhere because they are really good.

Death Cab for Cutie - Photobooth (live)
I got The John Byrd EP on Wednesday in the post and I started listening to this right away. This is probably the best song on the whole record and sounds even better when its played live in comparison to the studio version. You can read my review of the whole record here.

The White Stripes - We Are Going to Be Friends
I watched Napolean Dynamite again this week and then downloaded this song because it is in the title sequence and I really like it. Normally I don't listen to the White Stripes but I really liek this song because it's really very simple and nice.

Beck covers Nick Drake

The songs that he has covered are Parasite and Which Will and both can be found on Beck's website, Beck.com. I've just listened to both of them and in my opinion they are both good and definetly worth a few minutes of your time to listen to.

The John Byrd EP - Review

On Death Cab for Cutie's Spring 2004 tour they recorded what would end up being their final release for Barsuk Records before signing to Atlantic Records in November 2004, and fittingly it was a tribute to their sound engineer John Byrd. The EP is a collection of 7 live songs by Death Cab played at three different venues, the Wiltern in Los Angeles, the Filmore in San Francisco and the Showbox in the band's hometown of Seattle. Luckily they don't just stick to songs from their breakthrough album Transatlanticism, but play a good mix of songs from We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes and The Photo Album as well. The EP does what every live record should try to do, make you feel like you are actually there, but at the same time make you crave to go and see the band preforming live, and it does this all in under 40 minutes.

The EP fades into We Laugh Indoors, which sounds quite poor and flat in comparison to the rest of the record and seems to go on for longer than is needed, until about halfway through the song Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla seem to pull themselves together and the song instantly gets more energetic. This is then followed by the first of three songs in a row played in the band's home, the song is Why You'd Want To Live Here and it displays the bands characteristic lo-fi style of their earlier work that has been lost in their most recent release Plans. This is then followed by one of the more forgetable songs on the EP, Lightness, which while sounding good offers nothing of much difference from the album version of the song. Then comes one of the best songs on the whole EP in my opinion, Photobooth, although I may be slightly biased as I love this song more than any other. Played live this song sounds better than ever and far more energetic than any thing else on the whole album and it completely engages the crowd. The drums over the electronic drum beat sound near perfect and amazingly upbeat and combined with Walla's guitar and Gibbard's excellent voice it easily puts the rest of the record to shame. This is then followed by an unnecessarily long 9 minute version of We Looked Like Giants, which normally is a good song but in this case sounds directionless for several minutes in the middle and can get quite tiring listening to, despite opening very well. There is then a predictable version of 405 which doesn't stray far from the album version of the song but none the less sounds good and is reminiscent of the band's more lo-fi beginnings pre-O.C. The album then closes with a solid version of Blacking Out The Friction that then leads into a cover of the Sebadoh's Brand New Love, which is a fitting end to a great live EP.

However the songs aren't what makes this EP good, its the fact that it feels like you actually are there in the crowd. This is done by including sections of Gibbard talking to the crowd in between songs and how the songs are mixed together with such skill, even though they are played at different venues, it is hard to here when one track ends and an the next stops when listening to it right through. As well as this it's great to hear the shouts from the crowd to the band, like "Take it all off" at the end of We Laugh Indoors, to which Gibbard quickly "Oh, it's coming off, buddy."

Although it isn't the best introduction to Death Cab for new fans it will be something that pleases those that have been listening to them for a while and know their songs well. Although the record could have been more unusual, with perhaps a Postal Service cover thrown in there or some of the songs being experimented with a bit to make it more essential for everyone who is a fan of Death Cab for Cutie, but instead it is more a record for completists like myself.

Recently I've been listening to matt pond PA quite a lot. You may have heard of them becuase they did a cover of Oasis' "Champagne Supernova" which was then used in an episode of the O.C. I only started listening to them a couple of weeks ago, and I thought that they would be just another decent enough band, but I happily found out that they are a great band. They remind of Death Cab for Cutie but the vocals are very different to those of Ben Gibbard. They are also one of Rolling Stones top 10 bands to watch in 2006, but then again James Blunt is another one of the top 10, so it isn't that amazing an achievement, but none the less they are a great band. I would definetly reccomend them to anyone who is a fan of Death Cab for Cutie, or anyone similar. They're currently on tour so if they play near you then you should go and see them, because I've heard that they are amazing live, you can find the dates at their MySpace page which you can find below.
